Best Chest Exercises
The 5 best chest exercises
- Barbell Bench PressHeavy compound
Takes heavier load than any other chest movement, and small plate jumps keep it progressing for years.
- Incline Dumbbell PressUpper-chest builder
Bench at 30 degrees loads the upper pec that flat pressing under-trains, with more range than a barbell.
- Dumbbell Bench PressFlat press variant
Each arm works alone, so your strong side stops carrying the weak one through the sticking point.
- Cable Chest FlyConstant-tension isolation
Cable tension holds through the top squeeze, where dumbbell flyes go slack and the work disappears.
- Push-UpNo equipment needed
Same pressing pattern with no kit; scale by elevating your feet or slowing the lowering.

How many chest exercises do I need per workout?
Two or three is enough for most people. One heavy press in the 5 to 8 rep range, one press at a different angle for 8 to 12, and one fly variation for 12 to 15. Past that you are adding fatigue faster than stimulus, and the back half of the session gets sloppy.
What is the best exercise for upper chest?
The incline dumbbell press. Set the bench around 30 degrees rather than 45. Steeper than that and the front delts take over the press. Dumbbells let your hands travel closer together at the top and lower farther at the bottom than a barbell allows. Incline dumbbell fly trains the same fibers with lighter load if you want a second angle.
Can you build a chest with push-ups alone?
Yes, up to a point. Push-ups build real chest size while your bodyweight is still hard to move, which for most beginners means the first several months. Once you can do sets of 20 clean reps, add difficulty instead of reps: elevate your feet, slow the lowering to three seconds, or pause at the bottom. Eventually you need external load.
